Lawrence, James, and Mr Porter's buying manager, Daniel Todd, walk us through their favorite pieces from the curated lineup.
If you pay even a sliver of attention to menswear, podcasts, or both, it's pretty much impossible to be unaware of Throwing Fits. Also known as "The Only Podcast That Matters"—at least according to the guys sitting behind the microphones, Lawrence Schlossman and James Harris—it's a rollicking, boisterous beast of a show featuring celebrity guests, fit checks, and deep dives into the world of menswear. Schlossman and Harris are no strangers to the world of collaboration, having teamed up with brands like Blackstock & Weber and Diemme on TF-approved footwear in the past, but today they're going bigger than ever before in the form of a capsule collection with Mr Porter and a slew of brands from around the globe.
"Since the very beginning, our inspiration behind podcasting and really everything we do, from content to collaborations, has always been the same: to share our distinct point of view when it comes to our pure, unadulterated enthusiasm for menswear," Schlossman and Harris explain over email. "What makes this capsule unique is how it spans the wide range of our interests and tastes when it comes to brands and products. We truly feel like there is something for everyone."
As for working with Mr Porter, "This entire capsule was an exercise in our brain trust," the duo writes. "Between us, Mr Porter, and the brands themselves, it came down to filling holes in our own personal wardrobes and designing clothing we're beyond excited to wear every single day."
"When I first started listening to the Throwing Fits podcast, I was really excited by how both James and Lawrence were so enthusiastic about menswear. Their passion for product paralleled our buying team’s excitement," says Mr Porter's buying manager, Daniel Todd. "We approached this capsule by looking at what brands get us excited and ultimately what we wanted to introduce to the Mr Porter customer. It comes from a really grounded place and is all about encouraging our customers to discover new pieces from established and emerging designers across the globe."
We asked Schlossman, Harris, and Todd to choose some of their favorite pieces from the caspule and tell us about why they're so into them. From a military-inspired jacket that Schlossman and Todd are both enamored with to a striped shirt that helps Harris nail the "substitute-teacher-who-does-weird-shit-on-the-weekends vibe," here are the 12 picks that made the cut.
The moment we knew we liked Hayato was when he showed us his enormous Lil Wayne tattoo. The moment we knew we loved Hayato was when we first saw his Marcel Breuer's Cesca caning-inspired double knees. Working with him was at the top of our list when Mr Porter approached us with this project, and it proved true the famous quote by philosopher Immanuel Kant, "Collabing with ur homie on some super sick double knees in an absolutely sublime color combo truly does unlock self-enlightenment." — James Harris
How can you improve upon Monitaly’s already perfect military-inspired signature jacket? We might be biased, but how about going full noir mode on that jawn and turning up the chic to 11. By flipping the OG olive sateen and brown corduroy to navy and black respectively, you’re finally ready to lock in and storm the beaches of date night. — Lawrence Schlossman
As well as staking a claim for the nicest man in menswear, Yuki Matsuda is also one of the most talented. This Type B jacket from his Monitaly line is a style that is as relevant now as it was in the 1960’s era it references. A man can never have enough coats but if you have to limit yourself to just one this would be a strong contender. — Daniel Todd
Mfpen gotta be top three in the shirt world right now, and that's not just because they mainly use deadstock leftover fabrics gathered from mills across Europe, making them (and ergo Throwing Fits, and ergo you, dear customer) climate change heroes. The enormous "fuck you" mfpen x Throwing Fits coat is certainly one of the more eye-catching pieces in the whole project, but we’re partial to the mfpen x Throwing Fits striped short sleeve shirt in my eternal quest to nail the substitute-teacher-who-does-weird-shit-on-the-weekends vibe. These dastardly Danish bastards' S/S shirts have been slowly pushing all our camp collars to the back of the closet, and we look forward to tossing another campie on the donation pile once this jawn touches down. — JH
When it comes to Throwing Fits’ already illustrious collaboration history, footwear has always been our bread and butter because, well, nobody owns more shoes than the two of us combined. We’ve truly walked a mile in nearly everyone’s shoes, but there was one glaring hole in our collective rotation: the perfect workbook. Step no further. It’s here. This one is greater than the sum of its parts even if said parts are out of this world. From the supple collar and diesel sole, to the lush suede and moc toe, you’re gonna wanna burn your Timbs and Red Wings with a vengeance. — LS
Another banger from the house of Yuki, this Yuketen boot is a timeless, utilitarian style reimagined in a luxurious snuff suede. The perfect excuse to give your sneakers a rest, this is a pair that will quickly become part of your daily rotation. — DT
If you’re wearing a suit in 2022 chances are it’s because you want to. Our personal motivations? Somewhere in between a suit of armor and second skin. The middle of that venn diagram would normally be a big ask, but that’s why we tapped Stoffa to do up their louche studio suit in a sturdy, milk chocolate-y moleskin that’s begging to be worn daily. Regardless of what’s on your personal or professional docket, form them like Voltron or break the band up. Either way, you’re gonna look and feel like a master of the universe. — LS
Alix and David are on the precipice of numerous huge things with Maiden Name, but selfishly we’re most interested in them filling the dearth of men's jewelry that's actually tasteful and interesting, as opposed to all the D2C trash we're all assaulted with in infinite IG ads. Until now they've only sourced the most fire vintage jewelry, but thanks to the aligned vision of the gd mf boyz and Maiden Name, the world can finally adorn their fingers (and lobes) with eye-catching yet restrained metaphorical and literal gems. — JH
Throwing Fits’ western era rides on thanks to the sheer will of our friend Peter at Wythe. Bucking the platonic ideal of a denim rodeo shirt is one thing, but lassoing a tasteful and intricate embroidery on the yoke is a completely different story, one you’re gonna want to tell around the campfire surrounded by anybody who will listen. — LS
This collaboration is a real mix of high/low and this jacket is definitely the standout style at the higher end. Perfectly cut in beautifully soft leather, this jacket is only going to look better and better with age. Invest in this now and you will still be wearing it in twenty years. — DT
Nobody does Americana like the Japanese and, by extension, nobody does madras like Beams Plus. While our entire head-to-toe collab with them is the definition of turbo, the bucket is the perfect entry point for anyone aspiring to live life like one of our personal spirit guides, Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack. No, unfortunately it does not come with a free bowl of soup. — LS
Hayato is a brand that was introduced to me through this project and one I am super excited to share with our customers. The trucker jacket has long been a ubiquitous style and this is a contemporary update on a workwear classic showcasing what Hayato does best. — DT
As the owner of two previous versions of this short I can tell you they are everything you want a short to be; short and airy, what’s not to like? — DT
